“VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — When winter weather hits, many of us have a safe, warm shelter. But, local organizations are working to protect those who don’t, especially homeless children and teens.
There are an estimated 800 to 1,000 homeless youth in Hampton Roads. As the weather gets colder, the temperatures and conditions can pose a threat. Especially as homeless teenagers or runaways leave home with nothing but the clothes on their back.
Seton Youth Shelters is the only shelter dedicated to youth, ages 9 to 17, in the region. Seton runs two shelters, one for boys and one for girls, out of Virginia Beach.
“We need youth to know that we are here,” said Seton Youth Shelters Executive Director Jennifer Sieracki. “If they are on the streets, if they are homeless, if they are runaway, please, you can call our phone number.”
Sieracki said there are even more risks for homeless youth during the cold winter months.
“There are many threats to their safety, physical and emotional safety, out there,” said Sieracki. “And when the weather temperature drops, and it’s cold outside, it just really magnifies all those issues.”
To get in touch with Seton Youth Shelters you can call 757-498-HELP. You can reach the Boys’ Shelter directly at 757-498-4673. The phone number for the Girls’ Shelter is 757-306-1840.”
